For academic support programs in public schools during the 2008-09 school year.

Breakthrough Collaborative, San Francisco - $8,000
To support the recruitment, training and placement of young teachers in 3 Bay Area summer academic programs for disadvantaged childen.

Center for the Art of Translation, San Francisco - $5,000
To support the Poetry Inside Out program in Bay Area schools, which uses literary translation to teach bi-lingual students figurative language, creative writing, literacy, and self-expression.

Chabot College, Hayward - $5,000
For the Making Video Visible project in which students make films about their experiences with the transition from high school to college.

Children’s Day School, San Francisco - $10,000
For the capital campaign to renovate the main school building.

Cleo Eulau Center, Mountain View - $5,000
To support the Resiliency Consultation Program in nine schools to help teachers forge stronger relationships with students, particularly those presenting the most challenges in class.

Community Alliance for Learning, Berkeley - $10,000
To support the Writer Coach Connection program which places volunteers in public middle and high schools.

East Bay Agency for Children, Oakland - $8,000
To support the Eagle’s Nest after-school program of the Hawthorne Family Resource Center.

Jewish Coalition for Literacy, San Francisco - $8,000
[Jewish Community Relations Council]
To support a kindergarten reading readiness program called Jump In, placing approximately 60 trained volunteer tutors work with children in the classroom.

Marin County School Volunteers, San Rafael - $5,000
[Marin County Office of Education]
To support in-class tutoring activities in 40 public schools.

Partners in School Innovation, San Francisco - $5,000
To support a teacher training program in the San Francisco Unified School District focusing on building literacy in English Language Learners.

Project HELP, Sunnyvale - $10,000
To support the Math Center at Bishop Elementary School.

SMART (Schools, Mentoring & Resource Team), San Francisco – $5,000
To support after-school and summer programs for motivated yet financially disadvantaged middle school youth.
Stanbridge Academy, San Mateo - $1,000
For new books and learning materials for the school’s library.

Streetside Stories, San Francisco - $3,000
To support literacy activities in local schools through 2-week, classroom-based residencies focusing on students’ writing and reading comprehension.

Summer Youth Project - $3,000
[Northern California Grantmakers]
For a pooled fund that awards small grants to summer programs for disadvantaged children.
