SMALL GRANTS IN THE ARTS
Overview
The majority of the Foundation’s arts grantmaking takes place through this program. Organizations residing and offering programming in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, and with budgets between $100,000 and $750,000, are eligible. Grants between $1,000 and $10,000 are made to support a range of artistic efforts within the following disciplines: dance, film/video and media arts, interdisciplinary arts, music, theater; and visual arts. Grants may be for: artists’ fees for creative time, production costs for performances or films, exhibition/installation costs for visual, media, or interdisciplinary arts, and projects which aid the organization’s overall artistic development. Organizations may not apply more than once a year.
Deadlines for grant proposals are January 15 deadline for May decisions, and July 15 for November decisions. These are postmark deadlines. Separate guidelines should be requested before submitting a proposal.
As of the July 15, 2009 application deadline, the Fleishhacker Foundation will require applicants to submit financial information through the California Cultural Data Project. Organizations should contact the CCDP at www.caculturaldata.org to register and complete their informational profiles, or call 866 9-CAL-CDP.
EUREKA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
Overview
The Foundation offers an unrestricted fellowship in the visual arts. Artists must be nominated by a local nonprofit arts organization to qualify. Awards of $25,000 per artist are determined by a panel of non-Bay Area arts experts. The current cycle of fellowships for 2008– 2010 have been selected. General applications are not accepted.
SPECIAL ARTS GRANTS
Overview
Due to economic uncertainties, in 2009 the Foundation plans to make more limited grants for timely, core needs of arts organizations. Proposals for new programs or expansion activities will not be accepted, unless they are vital to the organization’s health. The main priority for the near future will be mid-sized arts organizations.
Periodically grants which exceed the scope of the Small Grants Program are made to groups with budgets greater than $750,000. The project must clearly demonstrate potential for broad and long-term impact on the local community and the art form involved. This might involve: facility access or use, community-wide program initiatives, or exceptional artistic projects. Not eligible are capital campaigns over $1 million and endowment campaigns. Grants normally do not exceed $25,000. To apply, contact the Foundation’s Executive Director well in advance of the two annual application deadlines -- January 15 and July 15 – to approve submission of a grant proposal.
As of the July 15, 2009 application deadline, the Fleishhacker Foundation will require applicants to submit financial information through the California Cultural Data Project. GRANTS IN EDUCATION
Due to economic uncertainties, in 2009 the Foundation plans to make more limited grants for core programs and will not be accepting applications for new programs or expansion activities. In addition, the Foundation will not be funding Arts Education or Facilities Projects, in order to concentrate on its main Education Grant priorities: Improving Students’ Learning Skills, and Teacher Professional Development.
The Fleishhacker Foundation restricts its Education Grants to precollegiate (K-12) education in the greater Bay Area. Eligible are: independent schools, nonprofit organizations that offer school-based services to public schools, and other special projects which fall under the program categories listed below. Ineligible are: deficit fund campaigns, annual funds, endowment campaigns, capital campaigns over $10 million, youth who have dropped out of school, adult education, fundraising events, and travel. Organizations may not apply more than once a year.
Education Grants are made in these programs:
- Professional Development for Teachers – to help teachers,
particularly those new to the profession, become more effective through professional
growth and renewal activities.
- Improving Students’ Learning Skills - programs that
take place at school sites that may include innovative curricula, academic
support for core subjects, enrichment programs, and school-based support for
education with parent or community involvement programs.
Education Grants normally range from $5,000 to $10,000. Occasionally larger amounts are awarded. Separate application guidelines should be requested before submitting a proposal. Deadlines are January 15 postmark for late June decisions, and July 15 for November decisons.
BOARD DISCRETIONARY GRANTS
Board members may periodically use limited discretionary funds to support programs of special interest. Such grants are not open to application.
