On Equity

June 2020

The Fleishhacker Foundation stands in solidarity with the Black community and all those who are fighting against systemic racism, inequality, and injustice.

Our work is deeply rooted in the core values of equity, fairness, and a commitment to “repairing the world” in the spirit of tikkun olam. This commitment calls us to do everything we can to combat the persistent and painful blight of structural racism and discrimination in our society. We have therefore long directed grantmaking resources, support, and attention toward people and groups that have been historically marginalized, dehumanized, and denied access to financial, economic, and educational opportunities.

But at this important moment, even as we state our solidarity openly, we join with those who rightly say it’s time for more than mere words; it’s time for action. We will therefore continue to listen, learn, and actively engage in efforts to further advance equity in our own work as we champion the work of our grantees and the diverse communities they serve.

We will continue to celebrate and support Black, Latino, Asian, Native American, and LGBTQ+ artists – and all artists – whose work fosters connection and empathy, promotes an understanding of our differences and common humanity, and serves as a powerful tool in the fight against bigotry, hatred, and oppression. We will amplify their voices as they uplift us, challenge us, and create opportunities for meaningful dialogue that leads the way for social transformation. We also affirm our commitment to our education grantees and partners as they strive to address longstanding inequities in academic access and opportunity.

Our work will move forward with humility and a deep concern for communities that have suffered too much for too long. We hope that this moment will serve as a turning point and catalyst to create a more just, equitable, and inclusive society for everyone, without exception.
