Coming to the Presidio Theatre on Wednesday, Feb. 28th, 6:30PM:
Alternative Facts: The Lies of Executive Order 9066. A film Jon Osaki.
ALTERNATIVE FACTS sheds light on the people and politics that influenced the signing of the infamous Executive Order 9066, which authorized the mass incarceration of nearly 120,000 Japanese Americans. The film will expose the lies used to justify the decision and the cover-up that went all the way to the United States Supreme Court. ALTERNATIVE FACTS will also examine the parallels to the current climate of fear, attitudes towards immigrant communities, and similar attempts to abuse the powers of the government.
A not to miss screening at the Presidio Theatre which sits not far from the 35 Keyes Avenue building where the executive order was implemented. There will be a panel discussion following the screening including the filmmaker, producer, involved civil rights lawyer Don Tamaki, and activist Karen Korematsu.
This event is sponsored by the Bay School of San Francisco and the Presidio Trust, and the film was supported in part by the Fleishhacker Foundation.

⠀

Maureen Gosling celebrates the life of singer Barbara Dane, a woman whose stellar voice supported justice movements in the Bay Area and beyond for decades, garnering an impressive FBI file along the way. Produced by Jed Riffe.⠀
⠀
"Skin of Glass"⠀
Bay Area filmmaker Denise Zmekhol explores her architect father Roger’s crowning achievement, a soaring São Paulo skyscraper, once a symbol of Brazil’s bright future that has since become a rotting, vertical dilapidated eyesore.⠀
⠀
"Water for Life"⠀
Award-winning Marin County documentarian Will Parrinello travels to Central and South America to focus on the risks activists take in their fight against the corporations that would privatize that basic human need, water.⠀
⠀
We encourage you to see these films and more, as well as Lynn Hershman Leeson's (Eureka Fellow 2011) premiere of Cyborgian Rhapsody – Immortality on Sunday, Oct. 8, where she will also receive a lifetime achievement "mind-the-gap" award. Congratulations to @lynn.l.leeson.⠀

The de Young Open is back!
This Sat, Sept 30 / 11am - 4pm will be the all-day, free event including live performances by local musicians, food trucks, pop-ups, and film screenings.
Building on the tremendous success of the inaugural The de Young Open in 2020, the second triennial of this juried community art exhibition will feature submissions by artists from the nine Bay Area counties. Curated this year by Xiaoze Xie, and Eureka Fellows Clare Rojas (2005), Stephanie Syjuco (2001), Sunny A. Smith (2021).
From the de Young: "Artworks will be hung salon style, installed nearly edge to edge and floor to ceiling, maximizing the number of works displayed. Designed to celebrate and support our local arts communities, this exhibition allows artists to offer their works for sale and retain the proceeds. As in 2020, we will also acquire a selection of exhibition artworks for our permanent collection." Don't miss this "Joyous explosion of local art." -Sarah Hotchkiss, KQED 9/25/23 Photo by Gary Sexton
