Guy Overfelt

Guy Overfelt creates work that is a confluence of American working-class heavy metal aesthetics and the poetic cannon of 20th century minimalism and contemporary conceptual art movements.  He explores cultural aesthetic markers of class, mass media, and crowd dynamics to create performance scenarios that engage human theater.  His solo exhibitions include the Oakland Museum, Ever Gold in San Francisco, Jack Hanley Gallery in San Francisco, and White Columns in New York City.  His work has been included in group shows in New York at Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, Artists Space, and Creative Time, and has been shown in international locations such as The Guangzhou Triennial in China, and St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada.  Overfelt’s work is in the collections of the Berkeley Art Museum and JPMorgan Chase.  He has been written about in The New YorkerThe New York TimesArt Papers, Paper MagazineIndex MagazineSurface Magazine, Time Out NY and Time Out Kobe Japan, and The San Francisco Chronicle and The San Francisco Guardian. He received an Artadia Grant in 2001 and the Chauncy McKeever Award in 1996. Overfelt received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. *Artist biography at time of award.
